Anisotropic fracture in nacre-like alumina

چکیده
Fracture in nacre-like alumina is studied experimentally and numerically with platelets main alignment direction perpendicular (along-configuration) to the one commonly tested (across-configuration) literature. In along-configuration, brittle failure noted after crack initiation no macroscopic deviation, unlike what observed across-configuration. However, NLA exhibits along configuration critical stress intensity factor KIc = 5.3 ± 0.5 MPa m1/2, same order of magnitude as The increase compared monolithic can be explained by a phenomenon containment at interface between platelets. Unstable propagation occurs just initiation, mainly following platelet interfaces which results crenelated fracture surfaces decentering respect initial notch tip.

Thermoelastic Fracture Parameters for Anisotropic Plates
This paper deals with the determination of the effect of varying material properties on the value of the stress intensity factors, KI and KII, for anisotropic plates containing cracks and subjected to a temperature change. Problems involving cracks and body forces, as well as thermal loads are analysed. The quadratic isoperimetric element formulation is utilized, and SIFs may be directly obtain...
متن کاملFailure mode transition in nacre and bone-like materials.
Mineralized biological materials such as nacre or bone achieve remarkable combinations of stiffness and toughness by way of staggered arrangements of stiff components (nanoscale or microscale fibers or tablets) bonded by softer materials. Under applied stress these components slide on one another, generating inelastic deformations and toughness on the macroscale. This mechanism is prominent in ...
متن کاملAlumina-on-alumina total hip replacement for femoral neck fracture in healthy patients
BACKGROUND Total hip replacement is considered the best option for treatment of displaced intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck (FFN). The size of the femoral head is an important factor that influences the outcome of a total hip arthroplasty (THA): implants with a 28 mm femoral head are more prone to dislocate than implants with a 32 mm head. Obviously, a large head coupled to a polyethy...
متن کامل0-000 Approaching Fracture Density: Anisotropic Gradient = Fracture Density?
For optimal hydrocarbon recovery from fractured reservoirs, a critical issue is to gain an accurate understanding of the natural fracture system. Currently, fracture characterization using amplitude based technologies is routinely performed relying on amplitude versus angle/offset (AVA/AVO) and azimuth (AVAZ) to exploit anisotropic gradient behavior, which is today commonly used in the industry...
